Malaysia holds Negeri Sembilan election amid coalition rivalry

Malaysia held elections in Negeri Sembilan on Saturday, marking the second state vote in less than a month as political allies that govern the country compete against each other at the state level, according to SCMP Economy.

Candidates from Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s Pakatan Harapan coalition faced candidates from federal partner Barisan Nasional, which defeated its rival in last month’s Johor race.

Turnout was 8.29 percent as of 9am, and the Election Commission said it is targeting 72 to 75 percent, a higher threshold than 68.35 percent in the 2023 polls.

SCMP Economy reported that the higher target is linked to about 20,000 new voters eligible to vote for the first time, and it noted that Negeri Sembilan has historically been a Pakatan Harapan stronghold, with PH winning 17 seats in 2023 and BN securing 14 to share a combined 31-seat majority for the state government.
