Russia expands crypto mining ban to Moscow through 2032

The ban begins Aug. 15, 2026, citing electricity supply concerns, and will apply to Moscow and parts of the Moscow Region and Kursk Region through Dec. 31, 2032.

Russia expanded its cryptocurrency mining restrictions to include Moscow, the Moscow Region, and parts of Kursk Region, with the new ban set to start on Aug. 15, 2026 and remain in effect through Dec. 31, 2032, according to Cointelegraph.

The change is set out in Resolution No. 936, signed by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin on July 25, 2026, amending an earlier mining restriction order, with records published on Pravo.ru showing Moscow and the Moscow Region added to the list of restricted areas.

Cointelegraph reports the updated rules cover eight municipal districts and the city of Lgov in Kursk Region, and extend existing restrictions in other areas where Russia cites electricity supply concerns.

In its prior justification for the Moscow Region restriction, the Energy Ministry said demand growth required the ban, and Cointelegraph cites estimates that Moscow and the Moscow Region have 65 data centers connected to the power grid with a combined capacity of 734 megawatts, including 19 data centers in the Moscow Region with 233 MW.
