Truck bombing injures 11 police outside Colombia base in Cucuta

The Colombian government blamed the ELN, offering a US$60,000 reward, as the country prepares for a new president next week.

Colombia’s government blamed the National Liberation Army for an explosion outside a police base in Cucuta, near the border with Venezuela, that injured 11 officers and killed a police dog, according to the Associated Press.

Police director General William Rincon said the predawn blast was caused by a truck left outside the headquarters building in Norte de Santander Province, damaging the roof and shattering windows.

The Defence Minister Pedro Sanchez, in a social media message, offered a US$60,000 reward for information leading to those behind the car bombing and called it a terrorist attack.

The incident comes as Colombia prepares to inaugurate a new president, with Abelardo de la Espriella scheduled to be sworn in next Friday after promising to cancel peace talks with remaining rebel groups; the ELN is believed to have about 6,000 fighters across Colombia and neighboring Venezuela.
