Friendly fraud drives US chargeback disputes higher, report shows

Juniper Research data cited by Yahoo Finance shows 158 million US transaction disputes in 2025, up 29% from 2021.

Yahoo Finance reports that Americans are increasingly using chargebacks as consumer scams and confusing credit card charges rise, prompting banks to reverse more disputed transactions.

A report cited by the outlet from the Consumer Federation of America found Americans lost about $148 billion to online scams and crimes in 2025, nearly 26% higher than in 2024, reaching roughly $1,009 per household.

According to Yahoo Finance, Juniper Research found US consumers filed 158 million transaction disputes in 2025, up 29% from 2021, with a growing share tied to so-called friendly fraud rather than confirmed fraud.

The outlet explains that chargebacks can be used for legitimate issues like fraudulent charges or billing errors, but some consumers dispute transactions they believe are correct due to confusion across online shopping platforms and vendors.
