Pakatan Harapan suffers Negeri Sembilan defeat as Barisan Nasional surges

BN won 18 of 36 state seats, giving it a supermajority of 25 when paired with PN, while PH fell to 11.

Malaysia’s Pakatan Harapan coalition suffered a major setback in Negeri Sembilan, deepening questions over Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s political strategy after the vote shifted momentum toward Barisan Nasional.

According to SCMP Economy, BN won 18 of the 36 assembly seats on Saturday, securing a supermajority of 25 alongside Perikatan Nasional’s seven seats, while PH won 11.

SCMP Economy said the result could also test the durability of Anwar’s federal unity government, as analysts pointed to voter dissatisfaction with PH’s state administration and noted that BN’s growing electoral strength may reshape the political landscape ahead of Malaysia’s next national election, due by February 2028.

The state election campaign, dominated by bread-and-butter issues including rising costs of living and governance and political stability, came after PH won 17 seats in 2023 with support from BN’s 14, with PN taking five.
