Bitcoin and ether slip as Coldcard hack extends into day five

CoinDesk Data shows bitcoin down 1.5% over 24 hours to about $62,600, while ether fell nearly 2% to around $1,842 amid $114 million in reported losses.

Bitcoin and ether prices eased as the multimillion-dollar Coldcard hardware wallet exploit moved into its fifth day, reviving doubts about the safety of self-custody for some holders, according to CoinDesk.

CoinDesk Data cited a tempered market reaction despite the estimated $114 million stolen, with bitcoin recently 1.5% lower over 24 hours to $62,595, and ether down nearly 2% to $1,842. Derivatives signals were mixed, showing BTC futures open interest at a one-month high and a slightly bearish long-short skew, while options volatility was steady.

The report also said some holders have reportedly shifted away from direct custody, sending coins back to exchanges after the incident, a move described as contrary to the self-custody trend crypto is built on. CoinDesk quoted Marex analysts saying the disruption is tied to cold storage itself, arguing that a cheaper setup will not address the core concern.

CoinDesk added that broader activity in parts of the DeFi ecosystem continues, pointing to NEAR Protocol saying its Intents system has logged more than $24 billion in lifetime volume and that it rolled out quantum-safe cryptography, dynamic resharding, and AI compute staking. The outlet also noted unrelated geopolitical news around U.S. Iran talks that was described as confusing, but did not link it to crypto price moves.
