UK factory output rises for fourth straight month, PMI slips

The S&P Global manufacturing PMI fell to 51.9 in July from 52.5 in June, but output and new orders both accelerated for the upturn.

UK manufacturing growth inched lower in July on a purchasing managers index reading that dipped, but the latest S&P Global survey still pointed to continued expansion.

According to the Guardian Business, the S&P Global PMI fell to 51.9 in July from 52.5 in June, with any reading above 50 signaling expansion. The report said UK factories increased production for the fourth consecutive month and at the fastest pace in almost two years.

The survey also showed total new orders rising for the eighth month in a row, supported by improved global supply chain functioning after disruption linked to US tariffs in 2025. New export orders flowed from the US and Canada, the EU, mainland China, India, and South Korea.

Still, employment gains remained limited, with hiring growth edging toward stagnation. The report attributed factory caution to uncertainty around the Middle East conflict, which it said could block supplies of oil and gas and raise production costs.
