US states sue over Trump tariffs on 60 trading partners
The new tariffs, imposed July 24, charge 10.0% and 12.5% on goods from 60 trading partners and took effect as a prior 10.0% global tariff expired.
A group of 25 Democratic-led US states filed a lawsuit against President Donald Trump’s administration, arguing that the latest tariff round on goods from 60 trading partners goes beyond the legal authority to tax imports, according to Reuters via SCMP Economy.
The states brought the case in the US Court of International Trade in New York, following earlier legal challenges by small businesses that sought to block the tariffs when they took effect last month, the outlet reported.
The administration said the July 24 tariffs target partners it alleges are not doing enough to stop exports involving forced labour, with rates set at 10.0% and 12.5% on the covered goods, SCMP Economy reported.
The filing also comes after prior global tariffs in Trump’s second term were challenged in court, SCMP Economy said, adding that Oregon’s Attorney General Dan Rayfield criticized the move as causing disruption for working families and home-grown businesses.
