37 Americans arrested in AI data center protests this year

Protesters have challenged data center proposals over concerns including electricity demand, water use, pollution, land use, tax incentives, and government transparency.

Dozens of people have been arrested across the United States during protests tied to AI data centers, underscoring how local disputes are becoming a wider political push, according to a report cited by Decrypt.

The arrests span communities where residents have raised concerns about electricity demand, water use, pollution, land use, tax incentives, and government transparency, the outlet said.

Examples include an Oklahoma resident arrested in February on a criminal trespass charge after exceeding a three-minute public comment limit at a hearing on a proposed data center, and an Indiana resident arrested in May after refusing to identify himself before speaking at a meeting about a proposed Amazon data center, Decrypt reported.

The expansion of opposition is also tied to organized events and lawmakers calling for moratoriums and tighter oversight as AI infrastructure grows, Decrypt added.
