Alibaba releases open-weights Qwen3.8-Max with Claude and Codex tools
Alibaba says the model can be run with lower intelligence costs, citing about 30% of what Claude Fable 5 charges, while shipping weights on Hugging Face and ModelScope next week.
Decrypt reports Alibaba has released Qwen3.8-Max, describing it as the most capable Qwen model it has built, and the first Max-class Qwen model to be distributed as open weights.
The model uses 2.4 trillion parameters in total, with 95 billion switched on at any moment, and it comes with setup instructions for Anthropic’s Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex, which Alibaba says it can support through its API speaking both companies’ protocols.
Alibaba plans to place the weights on Hugging Face and ModelScope next week. The outlet also highlights that Alibaba says it spent 16 days building a coding tool independently, making 265 commits and 127 pull requests, and that it later finished ahead of 458 of 526 human teams in a 24-hour machine learning contest.
On Alibaba’s own benchmark table, Decrypt says Fable 5 wins 15 of 31 text tests, Qwen3.8-Max wins seven, and Qwen wins one of 12 coding tests, while the standings reportedly shift for multimodal tasks, where Qwen leads most of that table. The article also notes Alibaba previously killed the free tier of Qwen Code in April as its strategy moved toward more closed, paid models.
