ATV thefts fall, but only 23% of stolen units get recovered
NICB data for 2025 shows about 59,000 recreational vehicles were stolen, yet roughly 63% of the stolen total remained unrecovered, highlighting a coverage gap for ATVs.
A National Insurance Crime Bureau analysis found recreational vehicle thefts fell 20% in 2025, but recovery rates paint a different picture for brokers and policyholders, according to Insurance Business. NICB reported that about 58,957 recreational vehicles were reported stolen to law enforcement in 2025, down from 2024. Even with fewer thefts, approximately 63% of recreational vehicles stolen in 2025 were still unrecovered.
The analysis points to underwriting and coverage gaps for common vehicle types. Motorcycles accounted for more than three-quarters of thefts, with 44,564 stolen and a 41% recovery rate, while ATVs had a markedly lower outcome.
For ATVs, only 23% of the 11,050 units reported stolen were recovered, the lowest recovery rate in the NICB tracking. Insurance Business reports NICB attributes the disparity to thieves being able to disassemble and sell ATVs in parts more easily than motorcycles, and to ATVs generally lacking factory-fitted GPS telematics and tracking systems that can help locate stolen vehicles.
