Bangladesh asks India to clarify stance on Hasina virtual address
Bangladesh warned that allowing political activity by an exiled fugitive could slow efforts to improve bilateral relations.
Bangladesh has asked India to clarify its position on exiled former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s planned virtual address from New Delhi, warning that permitting political activity by a fugitive could undermine improving ties, according to Reuters. Bangladesh’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam said the country wants its progress with India to continue and added that India must be clear on its stance.
Islam said Bangladesh’s request was its first official response to Hasina’s scheduled appearance on Wednesday at an event in Delhi hosted by the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of South Asia. The FCCSA said Hasina, 78, will speak by video link, alongside her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, and other speakers.
Islam also said Bangladesh has repeatedly raised concerns with India about Hasina and other Awami League leaders making political statements from Indian soil. The FCCSA did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the government’s concerns.
