BitGo moves WBTC cross-chain infrastructure to Chainlink CCIP
The shift makes Chainlink CCIP the default cross-chain standard for all future BitGo-issued assets, and BitGo cites SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001 certifications plus issuer-managed rate limits and transfer controls.
BitGo said on Aug. 4 that Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) will become the exclusive cross-chain infrastructure for Wrapped Bitcoin, known as WBTC. The custodian also said every future BitGo-issued asset will use CCIP by default.
In its announcement, BitGo framed the change as moving more than $7.7 billion worth of the token off the provider it selected in 2024, without naming the earlier option in the post. The company described WBTC as the largest omnichain fungible token by market capitalization, calling out support for secure, institution-oriented interoperability.
BitGo listed specific reasons for the switch, including what it said is stronger operational security. It said each CCIP bridge lane uses at least 16 independent node operators diversified across regions, organizations, and hosting environments, and it cited SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001 certifications.
BitGo also said CCIP supports issuer-managed rate limits and configurable transfer controls that it described as automatic circuit breakers, and that it will keep full ownership of its token deployments, with no reliance on CCIP-specific code in its smart contracts. The company added it plans to use Chainlink’s cross-chain token standard to create unified canonical WBTC deployments across supported blockchains.
