China’s military emphasizes emerging technologies and asymmetric warfare

SCMP Economy highlights a PLA strategist’s argument from a nearly three-decade-old book that China should not try to match the United States weapon for weapon, instead building asymmetric advantages against a stronger rival.
In that framework, the strategist wrote in 1999 that future conflicts would elevate domains such as finance, cyberspace, and psychological operations, while emphasizing the need to develop capabilities the rival does not have.
SCMP Economy also notes the book has drawn attention in Western military circles and has been studied at the US Military Academy at West Point as part of broader discussion of Chinese strategic thinking.
