Japan flags China’s longer-range carrier reach in new defense white paper

Japan has released a new 610-page defense white paper warning that China is expanding its footprint in the western Pacific and improving its ability to sustain military operations in more distant seas and airspace, including through stronger aircraft carrier capabilities, according to the South China Morning Post.

The document, released on Tuesday, frames Beijing’s growing reach as part of a wider effort to reduce risk to China’s mainland, protect key sea lanes, and reinforce its territorial claims in the region.

In response, the white paper says Japan plans to bolster its own monitoring systems, strike capabilities, and ammunition production, and it points to developments from the past year to illustrate the shift in the security landscape.
