Lenovo looks to expand AI officiating to women’s World Cup in Brazil

Lenovo says it is working with FIFA to reduce a 40-second wait time for Ref Cam images before the World Cup and now wants to replicate the technology for broader access.

Lenovo is planning to build on its “Ref Cam” technology after its debut at this summer’s FIFA World Cup, with an eye toward expanding AI officiating for the women’s tournament in Brazil next year, according to the South China Morning Post. The company said it is also working on digital twins for all 1,248 players to improve semi-automated offside technology for the 2026 finals, alongside launching an analytical tool aimed at making football “more democratic,” the outlet reported. In an interview during the World Cup in Atlanta, Lenovo executive vice-president Ken Wong said the company is exploring with FIFA what additional capabilities could be introduced for future tournaments, and that it wants to bring the technology into the football mainstream beyond the current FIFA-only rollout.
