Samsung plans native stablecoin features for 800 million Galaxy phones
The update would add fiat-pegged savings and payment accounts through Samsung Wallet, leveraging Samsung’s nearly 19 million users in South Korea.
Samsung is preparing to embed fiat-pegged stablecoin features into a large portion of its smartphone base, CoinDesk reports. The company plans to add native stablecoin capabilities, including fiat-pegged savings and payment accounts, to 800 million new Galaxy smartphones via Samsung Wallet.
Samsung says the move builds on its existing crypto wallet infrastructure, including support for connecting external hardware wallets, and it would roll the ecosystem across 61 countries. CoinDesk notes Samsung Wallet has nearly 19 million users in South Korea, which could provide an initial distribution channel for tokenized payments like USDC.
CoinDesk also links the effort to Samsung’s broader digital asset strategy and investments, including a $408 million stake in Upbit operator Dunamu. The push comes as South Korea develops a regulatory framework for digital assets, including the Digital Asset Basic Act.
Experts interviewed by CoinDesk argue Samsung’s advantage is distribution. Joseph Goh, director and head of Asia Pacific at Areta, says distribution is scarce and Samsung has a large reach, while Solstice CEO Ben Nadareski frames the shift as distribution catching up to liquidity.
