Taiwan opposition criticizes government response on South China Sea claims

Manila last week filed its official nautical chart for Scarborough Shoal with the United Nations, including its territorial sea baseline and 12 nautical mile (22 km) territorial sea and 24 nautical mile contiguous zone limits.

Opposition parties in Taiwan have accused the government of not doing enough to defend the island’s long standing claims in the South China Sea, after a muted response to Philippine actions related to a disputed shoal, according to SCMP Economy.

Kuomintang culture and communications committee director Chen I-hsin said the government is assertive when confronting mainland China but less responsive when Japan or the Philippines challenges Taiwan’s claims.

The shoal is known by different names across claimants, including Huangyan Island in mainland China, Minzhu Reef in Taiwan, and Panatag Shoal in the Philippines.

SCMP Economy reported that last week Manila filed its official nautical chart for Scarborough Shoal with the United Nations, defining the Philippines claims using its territorial sea baseline and the outer limits of a 12-nautical-mile (22 km) territorial sea and a 24-nautical-mile contiguous zone.
