Up to 80 Hong Kong ships stuck near Strait of Hormuz amid conflict

The Hong Kong Shipowners Association estimates about 1,400 to 1,600 seafarers are still onboard, after a June ceasefire enabled only 20 to 30 vessels to leave safely.

A Hong Kong shipping industry body says as many as 80 ships and roughly 1,600 seafarers linked to the city remain stuck in or near the Strait of Hormuz, as the Middle East conflict continues to disrupt maritime traffic.

According to SCMP Economy, Richard Hext, chairman of the Hong Kong Shipowners Association, said its current working estimate is roughly 70 to 80 association member ships and around 1,400 to 1,600 seafarers still in the area.

The association also said a short-lived ceasefire in June allowed 20 to 30 association-linked vessels to depart safely, but dozens of ships with more than 1,000 seafarers were still unable to leave.

SCMP Economy reports the US and Israel campaign against Iran has contributed to a broader global shipping crisis, with passage through the strait largely cut off and some vessels facing attacks.
