US in advanced talks to fund Solomon Islands port at Bina Harbour
The planned project at Bina Harbour would include a wharf, power, fuel storage and roads, alongside a tuna processing plant and climate-resilient port infrastructure.
The US has signaled it is in advanced talks to finance port infrastructure in the Solomon Islands, a move that could shed light on Washington’s approach to the Pacific as Chinese influence grows, according to SCMP Economy.
Solomon Islands Prime Minister Matthew Wale said that after talks in Washington last Monday, US officials made a firm commitment, subject to details, to fund a wharf at Bina Harbour as well as power, fuel storage and roads.
Wale also pointed to the Bina project as a critical development tied to building a world-class tuna processing plant, with the aim of creating thousands of jobs.
He said the effort would establish a climate-resilient international port in Malaita province, framing it as both an economic and strategic priority for Honiara.
