Western Union and Rain roll out Stablecard in 37 markets
The USDPT-backed Visa secured card lets recipients hold dollar balances and spend at Visa merchants or ATMs, with Western Union moving $107.4 billion cross-border principal across 285.9 million transactions in 2025.
Western Union and stablecoin card issuer Rain launched Stablecard on Aug. 4, a digital wallet and Visa card that allows people to receive remittances as USDPT and spend the balance at Visa merchants or ATMs. The product is positioned as an extension of Western Union’s onchain settlement push into a consumer-facing payment tool.
Stablecard is live in 37 markets and is intended for “key markets where local currency is not stable” and stablecoin demand is already visible, with Western Union targeting more than 60 markets by the end of the year. The app is available on the Apple App Store and Google Play, and users can move USDPT to and from external wallets and exchanges, including by loading the card into Apple Pay and Google Pay.
Western Union describes Stablecard as a “USDPT-backed Visa secured credit card.” While secured cards typically require deposits to collateralize a credit line, the companies did not detail the card’s mechanics, credit limits, interest terms, or fees, and they did not clarify whether the USDPT balance is used directly at the point of sale.
USDPT is issued by Anchorage Digital Bank on Solana and is redeemable 1:1 for dollars. Solana onchain data cited by The Defiant shows 7.4 million USDPT tokens in circulation across 162 addresses.
