Germany diverts flights after security incident at Leipzig-Halle airport

Police said a passenger flight from Mallorca and several cargo planes were rerouted after a flying object was spotted near the airport late Tuesday.

German police said a security related incident involving an unidentified object at Leipzig-Halle airport forced diversions of flights overnight.

The incident led to the deployment of a bomb disposal robot after an object was found near the south runway, with authorities reporting that at least one unidentified object was involved.

According to Agence France-Presse, a passenger plane from Mallorca and several cargo planes bound for Leipzig-Halle were sent to other locations after a flying object was spotted around 11.40pm on Tuesday.

Bild reported that the object could have been a drone with a detonator and possibly explosives near a Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft, but police did not immediately confirm that claim. The same report said another cargo plane later collided with an unknown object in mid-air about 6km from the airport and landed safely at Hanover, where minor damage was found on the nose section.
