Iran and Oman agree ship route through Strait of Hormuz
Tehran said any understanding with Oman would not make the strait safe for all vessels, citing continued US naval blockade and other actions.
Iran and Oman have agreed on a shipping route for vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz and are finalizing arrangements for joint management of passage, according to Iran’s foreign ministry.
The Iranian side said the geographic coordinates of the envisaged route have been agreed, with a joint statement containing the main considerations and points of agreement in final review and drafting.
Tehran also framed the move in the context of its de facto control of the strait since the US and Israel began their war against Iran on February 28, and it said it would make arrangements with Oman rather than pursue a deal to reopen shipping.
Iran’s spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said even if an understanding is reached, it would not mean the strait is safe for all passing vessels, pointing to factors he linked to the United States, including a naval blockade and other aggressive and threatening actions.
