Netanyahu says Israel did not agree to US Gaza plan

Netanyahu said Israel is reviewing a draft, despite receiving US-linked assurances that an Israeli pullout would occur only after Hamas disarms and Gaza is demilitarized.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel did not agree to a US-backed plan for Gaza, despite assurances linked to a future Israeli withdrawal. In a video posted to his social media on Tuesday night, Netanyahu said the draft the Trump administration provided was not Israel’s proposal, and that Israel submitted comments after reviewing it, according to SCMP Economy.

Netanyahu said a meeting with the US-backed Board of Peace on Monday included guarantees that the Israeli army would leave current positions in Gaza only after Hamas disarms. He also cited the plan’s goal of disarmament of Hamas and demilitarisation of Gaza.

SCMP Economy reported that pressure has increased from the right flank of Netanyahu’s ruling coalition, including calls to reject the deal. Two far-right ministers requested a new vote on Tuesday, arguing the proposal does not reflect what had originally been discussed, even though Israel’s security cabinet already voted in favor.

The proposal would include the deployment of international peacekeeping troops in the Gaza Strip, SCMP Economy said. The story also notes that the far-right ministers hold seats on the security cabinet.
