Proof of Play shuts down after blockchain gaming thesis fails
The a16z-backed studio will open-source parts of Pirate Nation and related development tools, while keeping the independent Pirate Nation Foundation focused on supporting the PIRATE token.
Blockchain game developer Proof of Play will cease operations after saying it could not develop a product that demonstrated blockchain-based games could scale as part of a decentralized internet, Cointelegraph reported on Tuesday.
The a16z-backed studio plans to open-source much of its code and artwork for Pirate Nation, including smart contracts and internal software-development tools. It also made artwork and intellectual property tied to Founder Pirates non-fungible tokens and Pirate Nation available under a CC0 license.
Proof of Play said the independent Pirate Nation Foundation will continue supporting the PIRATE token and keep the project website operational, but that Proof of Play will not offer redemption for anything. The studio said its Shiba Story Go! game was acquired by an unidentified third party and will continue operating independently.
