US 2027 defense bill advances with new China measures across AI, supply chains
Both House and Senate versions of the National Defence Authorisation Act include provisions tied to Taiwan, artificial intelligence, and defense supply chain readiness ahead of a potential South China Sea crisis.
China remains the central focus of the National Defence Authorisation Act, the annual legislation that sets US defence policy and authorises military spending, according to SCMP Economy.
The outlet says lawmakers in both parties are broadly aligned on expanding Washington’s military, technological, and economic rivalry with Beijing, even as the House and Senate differ on specific provisions.
SCMP Economy reports the House has already passed its version of the fiscal 2027 NDAA, while the Senate is still working to approve its package before next week’s August recess.
After the two chambers reconcile their differences, the bill would move to US President Donald Trump for signature, with this year’s updates adding new measures targeting China across defence procurement, supply chains, artificial intelligence, industrial policy, and economic security, SCMP Economy added.
