US revokes visa of Brazil ambassador amid escalating diplomatic dispute
The US said the visa revocation would be reversed if Brazil approves the appointment of President Donald Trump’s nominee Daniel Perez as ambassador to Brasilia.
The United States has revoked the visa of Brazil’s ambassador to Washington, a State Department official said Tuesday, describing the step as part of an escalating diplomatic dispute ahead of elections in Brazil. According to the official, the decision would be reversed if Brazil grants approval for President Donald Trump’s nominee, Daniel Perez, to serve as ambassador to Brasilia. Trump nominated Perez in early June, and the nomination still requires confirmation by the US Senate. The State Department official said Perez cannot assume the post until Brazil provides its approval. The official also clarified that Brazil’s envoy, Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti, was not being declared persona non grata or ordered to leave the United States.
