Western Union launches Stablecard, a Visa-linked stablecoin wallet
The Stablecard rollout covers 37 markets now, with Western Union targeting expansion to more than 60 by year end.
Western Union has partnered with stablecoin infrastructure provider Rain to launch Stablecard, a Visa-branded digital wallet and card that lets users hold and spend a US dollar-backed stablecoin, marking a major push into blockchain-based payments, Cointelegraph reported.
The company said Stablecard enables users to hold, receive, transfer and spend USDPT, a US dollar-backed stablecoin issued by Anchorage Digital Bank on the Solana blockchain. Stablecard launched in 37 markets, and Western Union aims to expand availability to more than 60 markets by the end of the year.
Cointelegraph said users can receive Western Union money transfers directly into a USDPT wallet, transfer funds to compatible crypto wallets and exchanges, and spend their balances anywhere Visa is accepted, including via Apple Pay and Google Pay.
The launch follows Western Union’s unveiling of USDPT in May as part of its broader digital asset strategy, aligning the token with the GENIUS Act framework for payment stablecoins. Cointelegraph also noted that stablecoins are increasingly used for cross-border payments, particularly where local currencies are volatile.
