Senate panel votes to refer Fauci for contempt after Fifth Amendment refusals
The Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee approved the referral on a party-line 8-7 vote, after Fauci invoked the Fifth Amendment more than 100 times during a prior hearing.
A US Senate committee voted to refer former top infectious disease official Dr. Anthony Fauci for contempt of Congress after he refused to answer questions about how the United States handled the Covid-19 pandemic, according to Reuters.
The Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee approved the referral pushed by its Republican chair Rand Paul of Kentucky in a party-line 8-7 vote.
The decision came after a hearing last week in which Fauci, who is 85 and retired in 2022, invoked the Fifth Amendment more than 100 times.
Reuters said the referral represents the sharpest escalation yet in a broader Republican and Trump administration effort to revisit the pandemic response and seek accountability for officials involved in running it, amid federal health policy shifts led by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy junior.
