Barrasso urges passage of Crypto Clarity Act before Senate recess
The bill, which would codify digital asset regulation, was sent to the House last year and now faces a tight window before a five-week Senate recess, amid mixed signals on White House review.
Bitcoin Magazine reports that Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso urged lawmakers to advance the Crypto Clarity Act before the Senate’s five-week recess, arguing Congress should build on the prior “Genius Act” through bipartisan action.
The outlet says lawmakers are racing for a vote this week, but recent developments suggest momentum has slowed. It cites reporting that Senator Thom Tillis said he has not yet heard back from the White House after amendments, despite earlier optimism from Senate Majority Leader John Thune about voting before the break.
According to Bitcoin Magazine, the Clarity Act passed the House last year and has since expanded into a larger bill text, including changes Democrats sought. Since July, a new version has circulated that includes ethics provisions barring government officials and their families from issuing or promoting crypto.
The outlet adds that some lawmakers argue the current draft still falls short, including a group of Democrats that wrote a letter in July. While Republican lawmakers have pressed for a vote, competing items on the Senate agenda ahead of recess have reportedly left the Clarity Act pushed back.
