BIP-110 nears mandatory signaling as nodes prepare to reject most miner blocks

BIP-110 is a user-activated soft fork, with mandatory signalling expected around Aug. 9 and any activation after block 965,664, estimated about four weeks later.

CoinDesk reports that Bitcoin is approaching a rare governance test this weekend, as a small group of nodes prepares to reject blocks produced by nearly all of the network’s miners.

The trigger is Bitcoin Improvement Proposal BIP-110, which is expected to enter its long planned mandatory signaling period around Aug. 9, according to CoinDesk. If the proposal activates, the activation would occur after block 965,664, estimated to arrive about four weeks later.

CoinDesk says BIP-110 has drawn only limited public miner support, but its supporters argue the low miner signalling misses the point because it is a user-activated soft fork rather than a miner vote. In the proposal’s design, nodes enforce the rules they consider valid, and anyone can run different software to adopt those rules.

CoinDesk also notes that BIP-110 aims to temporarily tighten consensus rules to make inscription techniques used by Ordinals and Runes impractical, arguing that non-financial data take up block space and increase the cost of running the network. Critics, meanwhile, point to the lack of miner support as evidence the proposal may be effectively failing.
