Bitcoin’s BIP110 soft fork faces split risk as enforcement nears
Bitcoin Knots plans to start rejecting blocks around August 8 from block 961,632 if they do not signal support for BIP110.
Bitcoin’s proposed BIP110 soft fork is approaching an enforcement milestone, with Bitcoin Knots set to begin rejecting blocks that do not signal support for the upgrade starting from block 961,632, expected to be mined on or around August 8, according to Bitcoin Magazine.
Bitcoin Magazine frames the key issue as a lack of broad consensus, noting that Bitcoin Core, the most-used Bitcoin implementation, has not adopted BIP110 and that only about 1 to 2 percent of hash power has been signaling support in recent weeks.
The outlet outlines three potential outcomes, with one scenario being that (almost) no miners signal for BIP110, in which case most users running Bitcoin Core or other non-enforcing nodes would see normal block production and transaction processing.
In contrast, Bitcoin Knots and other nodes enforcing BIP110 could effectively stop seeing new blocks, since they would reject blocks that do not carry the upgrade signaling.
