Bus driver kicks explosive drone away at Leipzig/Halle airport
Federal prosecutors launched a counterterrorism probe after the drone crashed near the aircraft logistics hub used for NATO airlift missions.
A bus driver knocked an explosive-laden drone out of the air at Germany’s Leipzig/Halle airport, potentially preventing an attack this week, according to a senior lawmaker. The incident occurred after the driver spotted the drone flying low while working late on Tuesday and kicked it out, a move described as courageous but dangerous.
Prosecutors said the drone was equipped with professional explosives and a detonator before it crashed nearby. Federal prosecutors have opened a counterterrorism investigation, and authorities reported the incursion on Wednesday.
The statement from Detlef Seif, a CDU lawmaker, was the most detailed account to date of how the drone was spotted and stopped. Authorities have not named the man involved or explained where the drone came from or how it entered a restricted area of the airport.
