China expands funding for HIV prevention projects in several African nations
South Africa received a US$3.5 million Chinese grant last year to support prevention programmes targeting more than 50,000 young people and harm-reduction services.
China is expanding its HIV/Aids role in Africa through new projects and support for local medicine manufacturing under its Health Silk Road initiative, according to SCMP Economy.
The outlet says UNAids executive director Winnie Byanyima reported that China’s Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund is backing HIV prevention work in Lesotho, South Africa, Uganda, and Zimbabwe following a trip to China.
SCMP Economy adds that South Africa, which has about eight million people living with HIV, received a US$3.49 million Chinese grant last year to fund prevention programmes targeting more than 50,000 young people and harm-reduction services for people who inject drugs.
SCMP Economy also notes that the shift comes as Western aid declines, citing the closure of the US Agency for International Development and major cuts to the World Health Organization, plus bilateral health agreements Washington signed with some African countries.
