Israel closes its Chengdu consulate as envoy departs

The Chengdu consulate ceased operations in July, following an initial June announcement, with Israel continuing to operate consulates in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hong Kong.

Israel has closed its consulate general in Chengdu, according to a letter published by outgoing consul general Gadi Harpaz, with the consul general leaving his post amid signs of fraying ties tied to the Middle East conflict.

Harpaz said his five years in Chengdu were the most memorable of his diplomatic career, and he added that while the consulate general is closing, the friendship ties and shared memories built during his tenure would endure.

SCMP Economy reports that the consulate in Chengdu officially ceased operations in July after an initial announcement in June.

Israel will continue to operate consulates in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hong Kong, as well as its embassy in Beijing.
