Lawson convenience store trial accepts JPYC stablecoin via barcode scan
The 322-yen JPYC checkout used HashPort and Canal Payment Service’s PAYTREE gateway, with settlement on Polygon and no dedicated stablecoin terminal added at the register.
Lawson carried out a limited trial of stablecoin payments at a convenience store in Tokyo, completing a 322-yen purchase in the yen stablecoin JPYC on Aug. 6, with the receipt listing “stablecoin” as the payment method, according to CoinPost.
The payment was made by showing a barcode from the non-custodial HashPort Wallet, which was scanned by the store’s standard point-of-sale register at the Lawson Takanawa Gateway City location. On the store side, acceptance ran through HashPort Wallet for Biz embedded in the existing POS, while Canal Payment Service’s PAYTREE multi-code gateway relayed payment data to the wallet provider to check the balance and return authorization.
CoinPost reported that retail stablecoin acceptance in Japan has typically required either a dedicated payment terminal or a displayed QR code, and this trial differed by adding no new stablecoin hardware at the till. The gap between the scan and the completion screen was observed at roughly five seconds on site, and settlement occurred on Polygon, though HashPort and Lawson did not release that timing as a formal figure.
HashPort said the demonstration was the first stablecoin payment linked to a convenience-store POS in Japan and the first gasless stablecoin payment in the country, claims that the report said were not independently verified. A second phase is planned for Aug. 17 at another Lawson Gate City store, using MetaMask and covering USDC, USDT, and JPYC, and Lawson said it plans additional stablecoin trials during August with no public launch date stated.
