OpenAI is developing a doughnut-shaped screenless smart speaker
Pricing discussions are in the $300 to $400 range, with availability targeted for 2027, according to Decrypt citing Bloomberg.
OpenAI is working on its first consumer device, a screenless smart speaker with a doughnut shape about the size of a hockey puck, Decrypt reports citing Bloomberg.
The battery-powered device is designed to be carried around the home and used in different positions, with speaker grilles and microphones, lights to indicate when it is listening, and a camera and sensors that send information about surroundings back to the AI.
The circular casing is expected to include moving parts that signal when the device is responding, as OpenAI aims to make the speaker feel more interactive than stationary smart speakers sold by Amazon and Google.
Decrypt also links the development to OpenAI’s ongoing legal fight with Apple, which sued in July over alleged misappropriation of hardware trade secrets, a case OpenAI moved to dismiss while it denies the allegations.
