Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey sign joint defence deal in Mecca

The pact is designed as collective deterrence, with an armed attack on any of the three to be treated as an attack on all, as the region faces energy disruptions from attacks and blockades.

Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey signed a joint defence agreement in Mecca, according to a Reuters account carried by SCMP Economy.

The deal is intended to strengthen collective deterrence against any act of aggression, and a joint statement said an armed attack against any of the three nations would be regarded as an attack on all.

The statement did not detail specific commitments or obligations under the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement, but it said the pact aims to promote peace, security and stability in the region and beyond.

A Turkish official said the agreement is defensive, not directed at any specific actor, and open to other regional countries, while not replacing existing bilateral or multilateral arrangements, as the three countries remain concerned amid heightened military tensions involving Israel and Iran.
