UK youth jobs crisis prompts inquiry into Dublin’s apprenticeship model

Ireland cut its NEET rate from 14.3% in 2015 to 6.1% last year, while the UK saw it rise from 11.1% to 12.8%.

Alan Milburn, a former UK cabinet minister, is on a fact finding trip to Dublin to study how apprenticeships and support networks have helped reduce youth joblessness in Ireland.

According to The Guardian Business, he says the scale of Britain’s youth employment crisis is serious, pointing to the UK having more than a million young people not in education, employment, or training.

The article says Ireland delivered the fastest reduction in NEET rates across the European Union over the past decade, falling from 14.3% in 2015 to 6.1% last year, while the UK’s NEET rate increased from 11.1% to 12.8%.

Milburn plans to publish a report on the UK crisis this autumn and brought a delegation including officials, charity leaders, industry figures, and the mayor of South Yorkshire as part of the trip.
