US Treasury sanctions two crypto exchanges tied to Iran laundering
OFAC said Shelbit and Aban Tether facilitated illicit crypto activity and sanctions evasion, with IRGC-linked wallets sending more than $1 million and Kayvanpour-linked wallets sending $2 million in digital assets.
The US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control sanctioned two crypto exchanges, Shelbit and Aban Tether, alleging they facilitated money laundering and sanctions evasion tied to Iran.
According to Cointelegraph, OFAC said the Iranian regime relies on the exchanges and related infrastructure to launder digital assets, and that the proceeds were used to support Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps amid military actions between the two countries.
OFAC also sanctioned an Iranian national, Siavash Kayvanpour, and crypto wallets and companies linked to him, including an operator tied to Shelbit.
Cointelegraph reported that Treasury said IRGC-controlled wallets sent more than $1 million in crypto to addresses tied to Shelbit, while wallets linked to Kayvanpour sent $2 million in digital assets to Nobitex, another exchange added to the US sanctioned entities list in June.
