Zelensky begins first official visit to Serbia amid EU and Russia tensions

The visit is slated to include talks with Serbia President Aleksandar Vucic and Prime Minister Djuro Macut, focused on expanding economic ties and security issues.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Serbia on Friday for his first official visit to a country that has kept friendly relations with Russia despite the invasion of Ukraine, according to Associated Press as carried by SCMP Economy.

Zelensky said the meetings will take place on Friday and Saturday, with discussions planned with Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic and Prime Minister Djuro Macut. He outlined topics including expanding economic ties, relations with the European Union, and other areas offering practical opportunities, as well as security issues.

The visit comes as Vucic seeks to balance Serbia’s traditional ties with Moscow against pressure to align its foreign policy with the European Union. Serbia has refused to join international sanctions against Russia, citing historic ties, and its EU accession process has been stalled in part due to Belgrade’s policies toward Moscow.
