Yen intervention skepticism returns as USD/JPY still swings widely
Japanese authorities have detailed FX intervention operations from April through June 2026, and intervention estimates this year include about ¥14 trillion, after USD/JPY later hit a 40-year high near 164.00 on July 23.
Brown Brothers Harriman says market skepticism about Japan’s FX interventions is growing, even after sizeable operations that sparked sharp but temporary JPY rallies against the US dollar.
In a note highlighted by FXStreet, BBH points to Japan’s intervention history this year, saying three interventions triggered kneejerk JPY strength but little lasting follow-through, with USD/JPY still rising to around 164.00 on July 23.
BBH also flagged estimates that Japan used a record amount of roughly ¥14 trillion in its latest push, after which USD/JPY fell from an intra-day high near 163.74 on July 30 to a low of 155.23 by August 3, a reported 8.5 yen rally.
The firm argues officials’ coordinated US-Japan action and warnings to act again raise the cost of fighting a stronger yen and effectively put a firmer ceiling on USD/JPY, while risks are also seen skewed toward further hawkish BoJ repricing, with Japan’s policy rate at 1.00% near the lower end of its stated neutral range.
