Iran says Hormuz will not reopen until US ends blockade and sanctions

Iran also demanded the US permanently end the war with Iran and its regional allies, lift sanctions, and release frozen assets.

Iran’s supreme national security council said the Strait of Hormuz will not reopen unless the United States “corrects its behaviour,” with a statement carried by Iran’s state broadcaster citing conditions that go beyond a navigation deal.

The council said the US must permanently end the war with Iran and its armed allies in the region, lift the naval blockade of Iranian ports and withdraw its military from the area, and “completely compensate” Iran for war damage. It also demanded that the US lift sanctions and “unconditionally” release frozen assets.

The US did not immediately comment, with the outlet noting Washington has wanted an acceptable arrangement for the strait before ending the blockade. The report said that under an interim deal signed in June, a schedule to end sanctions and a compensation plan would be part of a final agreement, and that negotiations would address frozen assets.

Separately, the United Arab Emirates said one of its ships was targeted by an Iranian missile, while Oman, mediating the talks, said discussions were ongoing in a positive and constructive atmosphere and condemned attacks on ships. The article also said Iran has imposed an effective blockade and wants to charge users for passage, and that the US opposes any Iranian tolls on the strait.
