Kano State hosts mass wedding for 1,500 couples

The government said each bride received 200,000 naira, and couples were also given items such as beds, mattresses, and blankets.

In northern Nigeria, Kano State has held a two-day mass wedding for 1,500 couples aimed at people who would otherwise struggle to afford a wedding for financial reasons, according to SCMP Economy.

The regional government said each bride received a dowry of 200,000 naira, about US$147, and support to set up a small business, while couples were also provided household items including beds, mattresses and blankets.

SCMP Economy reports the event is the second time Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has organised a mass wedding of this kind, which the government describes as part of social policy to support low-income families and promote social stability.

Among the newlyweds, SCMP Economy adds, are people who have lost family members in violent attacks.
