China-Australia ties hit a “good enough” baseline for Australia
The relationship is being recalibrated as both countries review their decade-long free-trade agreement.
China-Australia relations have moved to what a former top Australian diplomat described as a “good enough” baseline for Canberra, after years of strain that began with a significant downturn in 2017, according to a report by Graham Fletcher.
Fletcher, a non-resident fellow at the Lowy Institute, said the bilateral relationship is now on a more realistic footing, while still not aligning with what he characterized as Beijing’s broader ambitions, according to the SCMP Economy.
The outlet also noted that the two countries are currently reviewing their decade-long free-trade agreement, a development that comes as Australia participated as guest country of honour at China’s International Supply Chain Promotion Expo in Beijing in June, SCMP Economy reported.
