DPD internal records show missing sick pay and pension costs
The documents for more than 3,000 temporary workers did not list sick pay or pension contributions, raising concerns about breaches involving recruitment agencies.
The Guardian reviewed internal DPD records showing the costs of employing more than 3,000 temporary workers over the past two financial years, but the spreadsheets did not include any sick pay or pension payments.
The absence of those items suggests workers may not have received entitlements, may have been discouraged from taking sick days, or may have been moved out of roles before pension contributions became due, according to employment law experts quoted by the outlet.
The paper says withholding sick pay or pension contributions when they come due would be a breach of employment law by the recruitment agencies that supply the labor, and it points to guidance from the Association of Labour Providers that requires labor users to ensure suppliers are paid rates reflecting legal employment costs and compliance obligations.
DPD, a courier wholly owned by France’s La Poste, says it has a workforce of more than 15,000, operates more than 10,000 vehicles from 84 locations, and delivers more than 260 million parcels a year, with customers that have included John Lewis, Marks & Spencer and Amazon, according to The Guardian.
