Historian says US and China rivalry could resemble a new Cold War
A historian interviewed by South China Morning Post said the US and China rivalry resembles the US-Soviet Cold War at a high level, noting both sides possess nuclear weapons. He argued that the presence of nuclear weapons makes direct fighting less likely, with conflict potentially taking place through proxies rather than open war.
The professor said military strategists might view a “new Cold War” approach as one way to handle the rivalry, framing it as a strategy to undermine China’s power without resorting to direct fighting.
South China Morning Post reported that the historian added this kind of indirect approach would be preferable to open conflict because fighting is dangerous.
