Hong Kong restaurants see 20% sales lift after pet-friendly scheme

The program launched on July 9, and more than 900 licensed restaurants have been operating under the guidelines in its first month.

Restaurateur Ken Chu Ka-chun said his restaurant at Kai Tak Sports Park has posted a 20% boost in business over the past month, attributing the gain to pet owners dining under Hong Kong’s pet-friendly scheme that allows dogs into nearly 1,000 licensed establishments since July 9, according to SCMP Economy.

Chu, who runs Asura group and operates two venues with pet-friendly licences, said the restaurant sets aside separate seating areas for diners with pets and carries out thorough cleaning after each round, while staff also monitor for any violations, SCMP Economy reported.

He has publicly supported the policy online and shared views on restaurant management and the need for mutual respect between customers and businesses, but SCMP Economy said his advocacy also attracted criticism.

SCMP Economy noted the broader social divide that emerged around the program, with more than 900 licensed restaurants working through how to follow official guidelines while balancing different customer needs in the first month.
