UK PM vows tougher rules on hard to cancel subscriptions

The government says UK consumers spend an estimated £1.6 billion a year on unwanted subscriptions and will introduce a 14 day cooling off period starting next January.

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has pledged to curb hard to cancel “subscription traps” and misleading promotions as part of efforts to address the UK cost of living crisis, according to Downing Street, as reported by SCMP Economy.

The plan would require businesses to provide clearer upfront information, send regular reminders, and make it easier for consumers to exit subscription contracts, the statement said.

Downing Street also said consumers are spending an estimated £1.6 billion (US$2.2 billion) per year on subscriptions they do not want.

New rules are set to come into force in January, including a 14 day cooling off period that allows customers to cancel after a trial or after a long term contract renews, without detailing implementation, SCMP Economy reported.
