30% of UK manufacturers reported cyber incidents in past 12 months

MakeUK says only half of manufacturers have a response plan, and it cited JLR’s 2024 hack as an example of major output disruption.

Nearly a third of UK manufacturers experienced a cyber-incident involving their own systems or those of a supplier over the prior 12 months, according to a survey cited by Guardian Business.

The report by MakeUK, a lobby group for British manufacturers, found 30% of manufacturers had a cyber-incident in the past year, with many cases tied to lost production time and higher costs. Still, only half said they had a plan in place to respond if attacked.

The survey underscores rising risk as hackers become more numerous and better at penetrating defenses, including state-backed actors. The UK government has said cybercrime costs the economy £14.7bn per year.

It also points to increased urgency from generative AI, which can be used to hack other businesses autonomously. Guardian Business noted that JLR was forced to halt operations after digital intruders were found on the last day of August, and a Cyber Monitoring Centre estimated the incident cost the UK economy at least £1.9bn, driven largely by lost output at JLR and its suppliers.
